Residential development

York House, Marylebone

Lighting design is sometimes about providing architectural solutions. This project was all about creating a lighting scheme which would inject period glamour into this apartment, whilst maintaining the sought-after high ceilings and also providing ceiling void space for the necessary emergency sprinkler system. Set within one of Marylebone’s iconic mansion houses the apartment had seen years of redevelopment and had been sadly stripped of all original details, leaving it bland and characterless.

Working with the developer and his team of craftsmen, Althea devised a ceiling design with strategically placed lowered sections to accommodate recessed sprinkler heads. These sections have been dressed with period-correct plaster mouldings to blend them into the building architecture, creating functional bulkheads which enhance the space.

In keeping with the period style of the property, modern architectural lighting elements were carefully chosen and concealed, allowing the eye to be drawn to the decorative lighting elements and reinstated period detailing. Lighting was integrated into the perimeter cornice detail to provide a bright source of illumination which would be invisible when turned off during the day.
